212. ST III, 75.8 corpus.

213. Robert Barron draws out an important consequence of this commonality: “It is the noncompetitively transcendent God, capable of affecting being at the most fundamental level, who alone is capable of both creation and transubstantiation. In both cases, the deepest grain of reality—God’s sheerly generous and nonviolent gift—is made manifest. . . . Were the eucharistic transformation a this-worldly change, it would never function as an adequate representation of God’s nonviolent love” (“Creation, Transubstantiation, and the Grain of the Universe,” 218–19). Both creation and transubstantiation, properly understood, highlight that God’s relationship with creation is one of gratuity, not manipulation.
